When you put down roots in southwest Florida, you can expect plenty of sunshine, fresh air, and fun by the water.
You’ll find all of these things in Cape Coral! This vibrant community is filled with gorgeous beaches, spectacular golf courses, and tons of kid-friendly attractions. In other words, it’s a place where your family can thrive, relax, and never grow bored.
Today, we’re sharing seven of the top things to do in and around Cape Coral. Grab a notebook, write these down, and plan to spend your year basking in warm Florida sun!
1. Sun Splash Water Park
The beaches in our state are incredible, but sometimes you just want to hop on an intertube and soar through a water tunnel! Or, you may prefer to slowly wind your way down a relaxing river float. You can do it all at Sun Splash Water Park.
This local favorite is a summer hot spot, and it’s easy to see why. There are attractions for every age here, including the youngest ones! Do you dare go on the X-Celerator? Traveling 30 mph and dropping 40 feet per second, this five-story ride isn’t for the faint of heart, but it’s sure to cool you off.
2. Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve
Want to take the brood on a beautiful nature walk? You don’t have to travel far. The Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve is right in your backyard, and offers plenty to see and do.
Spanning 365 acres, this wetland area features a walking trail and visitor’s center. You’ll also find kayaks for rent during warmer months. Be sure to visit the Veteran’s Memorial Area near the parking lot. Built to honor those who have served in the U.S. military, these installations are both stunning and sobering.
3. Cape Coral Farmer’s Market
Cape Coral is serious about its farmer’s markets! There are three to choose from, so you can always find one that fits your schedule.
On Saturdays, you can visit the Downtown Farmer’s Market, which runs from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Then, there’s the Surfside Sunshine Market, open every Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. From May to October, you can also brighten your Sunday morning with a trip to the Cape Harbour Farmer’s Market, which runs from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
These markets showcase more than 125 unique vendors, and visiting them is a long-standing tradition spanning nearly 25 years. In addition to fresh food, you’ll also find live music and local crafts at each location.
4. Freshwater Fishing
Cape Coral is home to some of the most fantastic freshwater fishing in the state. When you’re ready to cast your reel, head to Lakes Park.
This 279-acre park features a splash pad, train ride, bike trails, railroad museum, and many more attractions. However, it’s arguably best known for being one of the top fishing spots around. The 158 acres of freshwater lakes date back to a rock mine located on the property back in the 1960s.
Avid anglers will find that there are many other spots around Cape Coral that also offer excellent fishing. Flanked by the Caloosahatchee River and the Matlacha Pass, you’ll discover more than 400 miles of navigable waters here! Other spots to check out include Sirenia Vista Park and Lake Kennedy Park.
5. Beach Hopping
Why spend the whole day at one Cape Coral beach when you can explore two? You’ll find a peaceful shoreline at both the Yacht Club Community Park and Four Freedoms Park.
Both of these public beaches are open to enjoy every day, from dusk to dawn. In addition to the sun and waves, you’ll also find well-maintained playgrounds, picnic tables, and BBQ grills at each locale.
Ready to shake the sand out of your ears? Head next door to the Yacht Club Community Pool, where you’ll find a heated, Olympic-sized pool, as well as a kiddy pool for the smallest swimmers.
6. Shell Factory
For decades, beachgoers have combed the shores of Cape Coral hoping to find a perfectly preserved conch shell or an elusive shark’s tooth. While it’s a fun pastime, you don’t have to spend the day looking down! Instead, head over to the Shell Factory.
This iconic institution is regarded as the largest shell retailer in the world. As you browse the 50,000 square feet of shopping space, you’ll find something for everyone on your gift list, from jewelry to toys.
When planning your visit, be sure to allow plenty of time to enjoy the other on-site attractions, which include a vintage-inspired amusement park, mini-golf course, nature park, Christmas House, and more!
7. Wicked Dolphin Rum Distillery
Wicked Dolphin Rum began operations in 2012. Crafted with 100% Florida sugar and local ingredients, it quickly became a local treasure. Then, it gained national attention.
Today, the family-run business is still creating award-winning spirits, all of which make great use of Florida’s abundant sugarcane fields. In addition to their trademark rum, they’re also mixing up BBQ sauces, hot sauces, coffee, and even fudge!
Visitors to the distillery can watch how the rum is made from start to finish on an interactive, informative tour. Lasting around one hour, the tour is completely free! It also includes a visit to the tasting room.
